Between 1949 and 1950, South African Railways placed the C-34 First Class carriages into service. These along with C-33 all-coupe First Class, E-16 Second Class and H-24 Third Class were the first steel bodied main line carriages to see service with SAR. They featured 5 compartments and 2 coupes and could seat 37 people and sleep 24. All of the carriages were built in the UK by various manufacturers who had supplied the SAR in the past. They had two toilet cubicles, one at each end of the carriage and a shower. The shower cubicle window was the same size as the compartment windows, but was frosted.

Supplied unpainted, but with a detailed interior with separately applied compartment doors, bunks and seat backrests so the modeller can customise the model as they wish. Note that these have a different interior to the E-16 2nd class models we manufacture due to the different seat backrest and bunk arrangements between 1st and 2nd class carriages. The 16.5mm gauge versions are supplied with a cut down version of the bogies to allow them to swing without fouling the steps. Bogies, wheels, brake wheels, couplers and screws are included. The model also features accurate underframe equipment and accurate roof vent spacing and arrangement.
