The class 32-000 were placed in service in 1959, the second diesel electric locomotive class to be purchased. They had an unusual 1-Co-Co-1 wheel arrangement. They are the GE U18C1, and were imported from the US. Incorporating a pony truck to reduce the axle loading, they were intended for use specifically to work the South West Africa network, which mainly used lighter rail than the rest of the SAR network, but were also used in South Africa, with locomotives being based at Germiston and De Aar.

As delivered they had shunters steps on each side of the pilot face, and the boarding steps did not extend all the way down to the bottom of the pilot. They were later modified with the shunters steps being removed and the boarding steps extended to the bottom of the pilot. We have modelled both variants as Early and Late eras

The model is supplied powered or unpowered and in 16.5mm or 12mm gauge. It includes couplers, screws and separately detail parts (Horns and vacuum pipes). It is DCC ready (8pin NEM socket) and directional lighting can be added by adding LEDs to the internal circuit board and optical fibre. It is supplied unweighted to reduce postage costs, we suggest using car tyre stick-on balancing weights to add weight to the model. The modeller will need to supply paint, decals and window glazing (Overhead Projector film works well for this)
