Please note: This is not the kit that we supplied previously. This model does not require a donor, it is complete with a DCC ready mechanism (NEM 8 pin) powered by a coreless motor and pantographs. The mechanism includes prototypical spoked wheels

The 5E were the first of the bodystyle that would become well known all through the SAR network. Designed by English Electric, the first Series 1 locomotives were delivered in 1955, painted bottle green with a red pilot. The yellow lines and whiskers were added later. The series 2 locomotives were delivered in 1956 and the series 3 locos in 1958.

The spotting eras as modelled can be loosely defined as Early, Mid and Late.

The differences between early and mid, and mid and late are based around three modifications. As delivered (early), the locomotive pilots (NOT cow-catchers!) had four long vertical slots each side of coupler.

The division between early and mid is based on the deletion of the left most long slot on the pilot leaving four slots on the right hand side and three on the left. Studying the extensive collection of photos on hand, this appears to have occurred some time in the mid to late 1960s, over the period of a few years.

The division between mid and late is based on the deletion of the right most long slot on the pilot, leaving 3 slots on each side of the coupler. This mod occurred in the early to mid 1980s. Unlike the 5E1, 6E and 6E1, the 5E does not appear to have had the captive MU cable modification on the RHS done.

The modification applied where a plate was welded over the slots from the inside of the pilots is not taken into consideration, as this modification seems to have been somewhat haphazardly applied over the years.
