As SAR started introducing non-steam powered traction, they encountered a problem heating their passenger carriages, which had previously taken a steam for heating from the locomotive. The steam heat wagons were brought into service during the winter months to provide heating steam that diesel and electric locomotives could not. They have a Vapor-Clarkson steam generator mounted in a central compartment, with a feedwater tank and diesel tank on either end.

As trains become equipped with power generation cars and fully electrical HVAC systems, the requirement for steam heat wagons falls away. The first passenger train in SAR service to do away with the requirement for a steam heat van was the 1970s era Blue Train.

Supplied unpainted. Prototypically correct Aligned bogies, wheels, brake wheels, couplers and screws are included. The model also features accurate underframe equipment .
