Introduced in starting in 1924 and continuing in 4 series up to 1930, the A-22/AA-23 Dining and Kitchen cars were a milestone in the history of catering on the SAR in that they were the first twin diners to enter service on the system. Although entering service after the retirement of D. A. Hendrie as CME, he signed off the designs leading to the sets being named the "Hendrie Twins". The A-23 had a half balcony on the train end with the opposite side enclosed with a toilet for the non-european staff installed. However, there was a concertina corridor connector on the dining car end. There was staff accommodation included with a compartment sleeping six non-european staff and another compartment and two coupes sleeping the ten european staff.

The model is supplied in third series configuration as this is what was used on the Union Limited/Union Express.

Supplied unpainted, but with a detailed interior with separately applied compartment doors, bunks and seat backrests so the modeller can customise the model as they wish. Window glazing is supplied in an assortment of fully closed, 3/4 open, half open, 1/4 open and fully open configurations for the modeller to customise individual vehicles. This model also features the fully sprung and operating inter carriage walkways unique to SARMODEL. Bogies, wheels, couplers and screws are included. The model also features accurate underframe equipment and accurate roof vent spacing and arrangement.
