The first two ES shunting locomotives were erected in the Pietermaritzburg workshops using spare Class 1E bogies, and put into service at Danskraal in Ladysmith in 1936. In 1938 a further 10 (Series 2) were delivered by Netherlands company Werkspoor.

A further two series (Series 3 and 4) were delivered in 1953 (10 units, Werkspoor) and 1964 (2 units, rebuilt Class 1E, SAR shops) and these had substantial external differences to the Serries 1 and 2 locomotives, so have their own product page.

Their unique design, with a central cab and low hoods either end housing the machinery afforded the drivers excellent viewing of surrounds during shunting operations. This appearance earned then the nickname "Studebakers" after the Studebaker Commander business coupe

Initially serving in Natal only, some made their way to Witwatersrand. They could often be seen bringing empty mainline coaching stock from the yards into both Durban and Johannesburg stations for service on long distance trains, as well as the usual yard work.

At some stage in their life, their headlights were moved from inbetween the cab windows to the front of the hoods, and this distinguishes our Early and Late models

The model is powered by a SARMODEL designed mechanism using our custom made spoked wheels in accurately spaced bogies with the correct scale wheelbase- We do not use donor chassis leading to ridiculous looking units (Since when has an SAR electric loco had a diesel fuel tank...?). It is supplied unpainted, the modeller will need to paint, glaze (We suggest using overhead projector film) and install handrails (0.6mm nickel-silver wire) in the provided holes
