Starting in 1976, South African Railways placed the first of 20 AC-1 Catering Cars into service. Deliveries continued through to 1982. These were converted from withdrawn C-33 All Coupe First Class saloons which had first come into service in 1949. They supplied counter and corridor food service and replaced single dining cars on many routes.

Supplied unpainted, but with a detailed interior. The 16.5mm gauge versions are supplied with a cut down version of the bogies to allow them to swing without fouling the steps. Bogies, wheels, brake wheels, couplers and screws are included. The model also features accurate underframe equipment and accurate roof vent spacing and arrangement.
